Whale Drawing Ideas

Easy Whale Drawings for Beginners (With Aesthetic & Chibi Styles)

Whales are just… majestic. There’s something so peaceful and magical about them, right? From the gigantic blue whale to the adorable beluga or the spotted whale shark, each one feels unique in its own way. I don’t know about you, but I could scroll through whale pictures for hours. Or even better, watch whale TikToks! (but don’t talk to me about the people getting “swallowed” by whales pls)

There are a lot of different kinds of whales out there — but since these drawings are stylized and chibi (aka super round and simple), you might not be able to tell exactly which species is which at first glance. And that’s totally okay! These are meant to be cute, easy, and beginner-friendly.

I tried to draw as many different types and poses as I could think of. Some are aesthetic, some are silly, some are extra sparkly (of course). So if you’re looking for whale drawing ideas that are easy, relaxing, and fun to doodle in your sketchbook or notes, I hope this little collection gives you all the inspiration you need!

Dreamy Whale

Whale Drawing Idea (15)

Let’s start with a very dreamy and aesthetic one, a whale you will never see with your own eyes: a whale floating in the sky! A gentle whale floating through clouds under a crescent moon, surrounded by stars. It’s the perfect aesthetic drawing idea if you want something a little whimsical. Try this when you’re in the mood for something soft and calming to draw. As you know, it’s the kind of drawing I love.

Super Simple Whales

Let’s draw some extra easy whales! If you want to draw whales, these are the easiest of the collection.

Round Whale

Let’s follow up with a super easy whale drawing idea: a around whale! This one is all about soft curves and chibi energy. It’s the kind of drawing you can make in just a few seconds/minutes, but it turns out so cute. A sweet and simple drawing idea for cozy sketchbook moments.

Square Whale

And here’s a little twist- a square whale! The straight-edged top gives it such a unique, blocky vibe, while the little fins and happy face keep it cute. It’s perfect if you’re trying out different shapes and want easy whale doodles that feel fresh.

Blue Whale

Let’s draw some blue whales now! By changing a few details, you can make it a totally different whale, so let your imagination speak if you want to tweak it.

This one shows a graceful blue whale, with a long, slightly curved shape and its closed mouth. The lines are smooth and flowy. Even though it’s one of the largest animals in the world, here it looks peaceful and simple to draw. Of course, when you draw it, it doesn’t look that huge;;

This sketch captures the moment a blue whale is breaching the surface. I love how just a few lines create that splashing effect! It’s one of those simple whale drawings that still feels full of motion and energy. Great if you’re practicing dynamic shapes.

Chibi Whales

The two drawing above were slightly more reaslitic (while staying very stylized lol), but let’s draw some chibi whales. These are definitely my favorites. The chibi whales will look way rounder than whales usually do in real life. If you want, you can change that!

Here’s a classic-style cute whale with a sprinkle of hearts and a tiny water spout. The lines are clean and simple, so it’s perfect for beginners. Plus, you can make it your own by adding color or sparkles (or both, obviously lol).

How cute is this tiny whale stamp? It’s like a little ocean-themed sticker you can draw in the corner of your notes or on postcards. The stamp border gives it that cozy snail-mail vibe, and the whale in the middle is super easy to sketch.

Okay, so whales don’t normally look this round (unless maybe it’s an orca) but when you turn them into chibi versions, roundness is part of the charm! This one’s soft, floaty, and surrounded by sparkles. It’s one of those drawing inspiration ideas that works great as a doodle or journal filler.

Aesthetic Whales

Let’s follow up with some aesthetic whales this time. These drawing ideas will focus more on make it look elegant and aesthetic, things you can sketch really fast without thinking much, too.

An idea for those who love minimal and dreamy doodles. A round frame, a whale tail peeking out of the waves, and sparkles all around- what’s not to love? Try this if you’re looking for easy drawing ideas that would look super cute in a sketchbook or journal

Here’s a fun mix of sea and sky! This whale tail is rising through bubbly waves with little stars sprinkled around. The waves look like a mix between clouds and water. The style is clean and aesthetic, and you can play around with your favorite soft colors.

As you know now, you don’t have to draw the whole whale to make something beautiful. This tail silhouette rising over a calm ocean at sunset is so relaxing to look at. It’s one of those easy aesthetic drawings that still feel full of emotion.

This one’s giving dreamy ocean vibes as well. The whale is surrounded by bubbly, swirling waves, almost like it’s floating through a sea of clouds. It’s an idea similar to the one we discovered two drawings above! A magical and relaxing drawing idea that looks more detailed than it actually is. it will look even better once colored♥

This drawing shows a whale leaping into the air, surrounded by swirly waves and sparkles. I drew it in a circle, to give a more contained feeling. It feels playful and peaceful at the same time. I think it can be a great base for a visual identity, a tattoo, or this kind of thing. I personally love it, and I hope you will too!

Silly Whale

This one’s a super round little whale with big round eyes and flippers tucked close to its sides. The simple lines make it one of the easiest whale drawing ideas to try, even if you’re just starting. Start with a soft curve for the head, then build the body, fins, and tail around it!

Whale & Baby

Okay, this one melts my heart. A big whale gently holding its baby, with soft lines and little hearts around them. If you want to draw something sweet and wholesome, this is it. Plus, it’s simple enough to try even if you’re a beginner!

Girl Riding a Whale

A dreamy and storybook-like drawing. A girl peacefully riding a whale, floating through the sea. There’s something so soft and whimsical about this one, I drew it while thinking of Ponyo from Studio Ghibli! (if you know, you know, lol)

Narwhal

This narwhal looks like it just popped out of a fairytale! With its long spiral horn, happy little face, and sparkles all around, it’s a magical twist to your whale-themed drawings. Technically a whale species, so yes, narwhals totally count! One of my favorite aesthetic sea creature doodles. If you want to make it another kind of whale, just remove the horn!

Beluga

This sweet little beluga is just adorable. With soft round cheeks, small fins, and a friendly smile, it’s an easy and lovable drawing idea. Belugas are known for their gentle look, and this version captures that in the cutest way possible.

Orca (Killer Whale)

Here’s our orca — one of the roundest and most charming whales when turned into chibi form. This version is shaded in with dark gray, featuring that signature white patch. Simple but full of personality. I’ve seen a lot of TikToks making orcas terrifying, to be honest. So I am a bit scared and wouldn’t want to face one in real life. But they still look cute, don’t they?

Whale Shark

(Okay – okay. I know, whale sharks are not whales.)

Yep, it’s a whale shark! I know it’s not technically a whale, but I had to include it. I just love whale sharks so much. They have these dotted patterns that make them so fun to draw. This one’s swimming at a slight angle, giving your sketch some cool movement.

Here’s another whale shark, but this time with color, and a huge open mouth that makes it look extra excited. (and probably ready to eat lol) Whale sharks are actually the largest species of shark (not a whale!), but somehow they’re also the cutest? Plus, a lot of people do believe these are whales. So it’s my right to put them in this collection, right?

One more whale shark, because I seriously can’t get enough of them! I love how their giant mouths look like they’re smiling all the time. This one is drawn in a super simplified and cheerful style, making it a great option for anyone who wants to explore cute and easy drawing ideas with sea animals.

Here’s a top-down version of a whale shark, look at those dotted patterns! This view makes the spots stand out even more, and it’s honestly such a fun way to experiment with different drawing angles. Whale sharks may be sharks, not whales, but they’re too adorable. It’s the last whale shark of the collection for now though, no worries!

Sperm Whale

This is a sperm whale, with its signature boxy head and long body. The curved lines make it really satisfying to draw. It’s a great easy whale sketch idea if you’re looking to practice more recognizable whale shapes without too much detail.

Wrap Up

Andddd that’s it for my little whale collection! 🐳(this emoticon is too cute) Have you found any easy whale drawing idea that you want to try? Even though I love whales with all my heart… I’m actually scared of the ocean 😅
Like, deep sea? Nope. Seeing a whale up close? I’d probably cry (in fear and awe at the same time). So these cute whale drawings are my little way of appreciating them from a very safe distance.

If you’re looking for easy fish drawing ideas, I actually made a full article just for that – check it out here.

And next up, I’m working on some other sea creatures too! Think octopus, jellyfish, maybe a sea bunny? We’ll see!

Hope you had fun sketching with me today 💙
