Hi everybody. 🙂 Today, we draw dragons!
Dragons have long captured our imaginations as the ultimate fantasy creatures, appearing in countless stories, myths, and artworks across cultures. These legendary beasts come in many forms, from the majestic six-limbed dragons with wings, and 2 pairs of legs, to the sleek four-limbed varieties with just wings and one pair of legs, as well as serpentine dragons that soar through the skies without the aid of wings at all. Each type of dragon brings its own unique flair and personality, offering endless possibilities for creative expression.
In this article, I’ll guide you through a variety of dragon drawing ideas, showcasing different styles and representations that range from the fierce and formidable to the cute and whimsical. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just starting out, there’s something here for everyone who loves to bring these fantastical creatures to life on paper.
Materials
- Use a pencil and an eraser to sketch your doodle first
- Then go over your initial sketch with an ink pen of your choice
- When the ink has dried out, erase the sketch under it
- Done!
Ready ? Let’s go! 🙂
How to Draw a Cute Dragon
Let’s start by learning one or two things about how to draw dragons. As you know, dragons are quite complex creatures. And if you wish to draw dragons “realistically”, this won’t be the article for you. Here, we’ll focus on how to make their body and features easy to draw. There are several different sort of dragons. Wyverns, dragons, chinese dragons, and probably as many forms as you can imagine. People draw them in sooo many various ways. The one I will show you right now will be a simple dragon like we see often: with two pairs of legs.

- 1. Let’s start with the (very) simplified skeleton, the basic shapes that will help you draw your dragon! Circles (or ovals) for the head and body, “1” for the neck, and front legs, and “2” for the visible back leg.
- 2. Now let’s draw the body! First, we draw it without much details. It could look like any animal at this point! Actually, you can use this skeleton for many other animals like cats or dogs.
- 3. Let’s add the details. It depends on how you want your dragon to look. Some like the “dinosaur” look, some prefer dragons with fur, or any other you can think of lol.
- 4. Refine, erase the lines you don’t need anymore, and voilà! A cute little dragon~
Simple Dragon Head

Let’s follow up with a minimalist take on a dragon’s head, with just a few lines to define the shape and expression. This design focuses on the essence of a dragon, using as few lines as possible to capture its character. It’s a great option for a quick dragon doodle!
Cool Dragon Head

This design is a sleek and stylish tribal representation of a dragon’s head. It uses bold, flowing lines to create a sense of movement and power. The design is minimalistic yet captures the essence of a fierce dragon. This could be a nice dragon tattoo idea too!
Dragon Laying

This dragon is lying on its belly with its wings slightly folded on its back. It has a relaxed vibe, and is a really easy way to draw a dragon in my opinion.
Chibi Dragon

This dragon is the definition of cute! It’s a chibi-style dragon with a round head and tiny body. The little wings and sparkles around it add to the whimsical feel. Perfect if you’re looking for something adorable and easy to draw that still has that magical dragon vibe.
How to Draw a Flying Dragon

Here is another “how to draw a dragon” one! This one is a chibi dragon, flying around. I love drawing chibi dragons because they’re so silly and cute compared to what we imagine as “real dragons”.
- 1. Draw a circle for the head, an oval for the body, and sticks & circles for the limbs and tail. For clarity, I didn’t draw the back leg oval shapes completely, because I’m trying to keep the step by step tutorials very simple. So the thigh oval shape is missing! But you can draw it if you prefer.
- 2. On top of the basic shapes you’ve just drawn, draw the body shape
- 3. Refine the drawing with details (as always, do not press too hard on your pencil!).
- 4. Erase the overlapping lines (around the head and wings, and any other that you might see on your drawing)
- 5. Time to color it!
Baby Dragon Sitting

Another cute one ! 🙂 The addition of small sparkles around it gives it a magical aura. This is a straightforward design that’s perfect for beginners. I love these little chibi dragon versions because they’re so easy to draw!
Serpent Dragon

Doesn’t it make you think of the Pokémon named Draco ? I really loved this Pokémon as a child. I tried to make a new version of it, with the same vibe overall. The simplicity of the lines makes this a fun and easy dragon to draw,
Happy Walking Dragon

This dragon looks like it’s taking a joyful walk! With a big smile and a little flame at the tip of its tail, isn’t it cute? The simple lines and rounded shapes make it easy to draw, just like the other chibi dragons we’ve discovered so far.
Cute Little Dragon

Another cute easy dragon to try. Can you tell I like drawing cute dragons ? I try to vary the positions though, so you can choose amongst them !
Sleeping Dragon

Here we have a very peaceful dragon lying down. The dragon’s eyes are closed, and it looks like it’s having a restful nap. (half awake half sleeping kind of thing I guess lol) It’s perfect for anyone who wants to draw a peaceful dragon scene.
Growling Dragon

This dragon has a bit more attitude! It’s sitting upright, showing a bit of fierceness. The sharp lines and the expression on its face give it a more powerful look. This is ideal if you want to experiment with adding more emotion and energy to your dragon drawings.
Dragon Sketch

This sketch features a dragon mid-flight. It’s definitely not finished, but a bit of a more serious sketch. I wanted to add it because I really like the vibe it has. It’s cute yet serious looking, you know? It’s perfect for those who are a bit more advanced and want to practice creating dynamic poses and more intricate details (if we compare to the others at least)
Dragon in a Teacup

This is one very cute idea – a small dragon peeking out of a teacup! And as you might know, I often hide the body of difficult drawings in things (eggs, cups, mugs, anything.) It makes it easier to draw if you’re having difficulties! So if you have a hard time drawing the body of dragons, try this way!
Cute Dragon Step by Step

And here is yet another step by step cute dragon♥ This one is a bit more difficult, and I tried my best to decompose it into understandable steps.
- 1. Draw a circle for the head, and an oval shape for the body
- 2. On top of your circle and oval shapes, draw sticks and rough shapes for the legs and wings.
- 3. Refine the shapes. Take your time for this one, but use pencil and do not press too hard on your lines. This will be refined further in the next step. This step refines the basic shape without bringing in too much details, so it stays relatively simple.
- 4. Now, on to the details! The most important part to refine here are the legs. But if you like the non-refined version, you can also stick with it! Draw the face, refine the wings and tail.
- 5. Bring it some simple coloring! I chose purple and yellow this time. I find it super cute!
Dragon Fairy

A small dragon drawn with big, expressive eyes and colorful fairy wings. It’s quite similar to the step by step tutorial I’ve just shown you. So you can try this one as well if you want! The use of color in this drawing really makes it pop. The dragon’s round body and oversized head make it look especially adorable.
Happy Flying Dragon

If you know Neopets and Shoyrus, this drawing idea might make you think of them ! I used to love Shoyrus when I was playing Neopets, so I couldn’t resist!
Curled Sleeping Dragon

Another peaceful design, this one features a dragon curled up tightly. It’s probably my favorite way to draw a sleeping dragon. The simplicity of the lines emphasizes a cozy vibe. It’s a great choice if you want to focus on creating a calming vibe in your drawing!
Chubby Dragon with a Big Belly

This drawing showcases a dragon with a big, round belly, looking like it’s just had a big meal. He looks a little upset though, why would that be ? I took an inspiration from Pinterest to draw this one!
Sleek Dragon with Pink Wings

I really like this one! 🙂 It has a more elegant and sleek design, with long limbs and a slender body. The dark grey and pink color combination gives it a pop that I love. The sharp lines and angular features make this a more sophisticated dragon, don’t you think?
Tall and Cute Dragon

This dragon has a tall, slender body, and looks quite silly. Its tiny wings and antler-like horns give it a quirky and distinguished appearance from everything we’ve seen so far. I love it to be honest lol
Dragon with Open Wings

In this drawing, the dragon flies with its wings wide open. The details in the wings and body give it a more traditional fantasy dragon look. It’s the first “wyvern” dragon of this collection. It has only two wings, and two legs. I love wyverns but I find them quite hard to draw in various positions. They’re only easy to draw while flying!
Cool Flying Dragon

Here we have a dragon with a long, flowing body and large wings, gliding gracefully through the air. The lines are elegant and smooth, capturing the fluid motion of the dragon. This design is ideal for anyone who enjoys creating dynamic, movement-filled drawings.
Adorable Baby Dragon

Okay, isn’t this one super cute? I love it seriously. Such a perfect chibi dragon! The big eyes give it an innocent, lovable look, making it an excellent choice for anyone who loves drawing cute characters.
Little Standing Dragon

This one is very similar to the one we just discovered right above. It’s super cute as well! Just another option you could choose for your next dragon doodle if you want~ The simple, rounded shapes make it easy to draw and perfect for beginners.
Flying Baby Dragon

Here’s an easy chibi wyvern to draw. Mid-flight, with a round body and stubby limbs. This drawing is lighthearted and easy to replicate, ideal for a quick and fun sketch. If you prefer wyverns to dragons and wanted a chibi version of it, here you go 🙂
How to Draw a Dragon Sitting

Here comes another step by step tutorial of how to draw a dragon! Isn’t this one super cute as well? As you can tell, I really like purple/pink colors lol. But you can choose the colors you prefer!
- 1. Draw the usual shape we’d give a sitting cat: a circle for the head, oval for the body, then “2 L L” for the legs!
- 2. Let’s add the details that will make it a dragon: the tail & wing
- 3. Now we draw the shape of the actual dragon by following the skeleton we drew.
- 4. Refine by adding details. As always for this step, if you don’t want to refine, you don’t have to. The non refined version will give a less detailed but still cute dragon! But make sure to draw the face.
- 5. Color time~!
Simple Dragon

This little dragon has a large head and even larger wings! The wings are spread wide, giving the dragon an impressive presence despite its simple design. This one is just a silly dragon drawing to be honest lol
Flying Dragon Looking Up

In this drawing, the dragon is looking up with its wings raised, taking off into the sky. Great for capturing a sense of anticipation and movement in my opinion
Sleeping Dragon

A very simple and peaceful design, this dragon is lying flat on the ground, sound asleep. The straight lines of the body and the minimal details make it a very easy drawing to create. You could make it sleep on top of something you like, like books, a phone, or anything else
Standing Dragon

Another standing dragon that is similar to the one we discovered not too many drawings ago in this collection. It’s a bit less silly than the previous one, but still super cute, isn’t it?
Sitting Dragon with Open Wings

This design shows a dragon sitting calmly with its wings spread out. Another easy drawing idea to try ! 🙂 Since I already introduced how to draw a dragon sitting twice, I believe you can draw this one easily!
Cute Sitting Dragon

Let’s follow up with another adorable dragon sitting upright. I decided to draw a unique horn on this dragon and play around a bit with what we know – and don’t know – about dragons. maybe a unicorn dragon?
Curled Up Baby Dragon

Another cute dragon curling up. Again, the dragon has a horn, and ears shaped like leaves. Isn’t it cute ?
Another Dragon Resting

I’ve included many dragons resting in this list, but never exactly in the same position. Here is another one you can try! It has a little bit more details compared to the previous ones!
Spiraling Dragon

Here’s a more stylized take-a dragon with a body that twists into a spiral. This one is slightly more abstract, focusing on the flow and movement of the dragon’s form.
Simple Side View Dragon

This dragon is drawn in a very simple side view, with minimal details. The design is clean and straightforward, making it easy to replicate.
Dragon Head with Wings

A fun and quick drawing of just a dragon’s head with its wings spread out. It’s another idea if you don’t want / can’t draw the body of the dragon. Just draw the head and wings! Easy enough, isn’t it? 🙂
Sitting Dragon with Big Eyes

Here’s another seated dragon, but this time with big, round eyes that give it an innocent puppy-like expression. The wings are small, and the body is plump, making this dragon look extra cuddly and cute. I was thinking of “How To Train a Dragon” when I drew this one. If you know, you know~
Haku From Spirited Away

You might have seen my Ghibli collection where I share a bunch of drawing ideas inspired from famous Ghibli animation movies. Well, if you know Spirited Away, you probably know Haku! He is so elegant in his dragon form, I had to add this drawing to the collection. If you want to see more from the Ghibli collection, it’s here!

Tribal Dragon Symbol

Next up, we have another stylized tribal dragon design. It’s a super cool dragon to draw in my opinion! This is perfect for looking for a more symbolic and artistic dragon design, or a tattoo idea.
Curled Up Baby Dragon

Last drawing idea for this collection! 🙂 This dragon is curled up in a tiny ball, with its tail wrapped around a small flame. The dragon’s eyes are closed, making it look peaceful and content. I couldn’t finish this collection without another cute and simple chibi dragon!
