Hello there! I’m back with some new drawing ideas. Today, we’re gonna discover some easy and cute butterfly drawing ideas. I tried to make most of these drawings as simple as possible, but some are a bit more complex !
I’ve tried to include a big variety of drawings, you can take inspiration from them or copy them for your doodles as you wish.
I hope you can find some nice ideas for your next butterfly doodles amongst these. 🙂

This post focuses on cute, aeshetic and sometimes whimsical drawing ideas of butterflies.
Update (dec. 2025): I used to have two articles (one for cute butterflies, the other one for more aesthetic butterflies) but I merged the two articles into one, this one! So if you used to like a butterfly in the other article, it’s still here! 🙂
Materials
- Use a pencil and an eraser to sketch your doodle first
- Then go over your initial sketch with an ink pen of your choice
- When the ink has dried out, erase the sketch under it
- Done!
A Simple Butterfly

First, a very simple doodle of a butterfly. A butterfly is a majestic and beautiful insect. It is also complex when you look at it. The colors, shape, the legs… But when you want to doodle it, you can simplify it as much as you want ! For this doodle, I use a simple body that has the shape of the letter “l”, and the two wings, shaped like “B” or “3”. You can add or omit the antennas, to your liking!
And there you have a very simple butterfly.
Butterfly From the Side

When you know how to draw a butterfly from the front, drawing one from the side view is also very easy. Take your front-view butterfly, and remove one-half of the drawing. Tweak it a little bit, and you have the profile of a butterfly!
As you can see, on this doodle, the shape of the butterfly is a little more complicated but still very easy!
Butterflies and Stars

Now that you can doodle butterflies, it’s easy to make cute doodles while integrating them. Here, we draw the butterflies flying around with stars to decorate the doodle and make it look more adorable.
Butterfly and Flower

Another element that you can add next to a butterfly is a flower! You always find butterflies flying around flowers. And as you can see, I really like drawing little stars and dots around butterflies. When I think of a butterfly, I always think of some magic power they spread around.
Butterflies in a Flower Field

You can also draw butterflies flying around a field of flowers. You can make it as detailed as you want, but I try to keep it simple for these doodles, so you can re-draw it easily!
Girl Looking at Butterfly

In “Aesthetic Drawing Ideas : Cute Girls” we learned how to draw cute girls. Here, I just drew a butterfly from the side view coupled with a cute girl looking at him. Basically, you can add any thing / person / animal next to a butterfly, it always works.
Hand and Butterfly

Now I know hands are not easy to draw. But you can simplify this hand by just drawing one finger if you don’t feel comfortable drawing hands. Isn’t this image cute ? A butterfly flying around and getting some rest on your hand.
Cat and Butterfly

In “22 Easy Cute Cat Drawing Ideas“, we learned how to draw cats and discovered many cat drawing ideas. Cats are curious creatures, and I like imagining a cat observing a butterfly without moving. I think a dog would often quickly try to eat the butterfly… Even though they mean no harm. 🙂 So, I drew it with a cat ! Of course, feel free to draw a butterfly next to a dog!
Butterfly and a Jar of Stars

Another cute idea is to draw a jar full of stars (I drew only three stars, but feel free to draw more) and draw a butterfly flying around it. Stars and butterflies together just make everything cute ! And it’s super easy to draw, it just requires a little bit of practice to get the jar right. 🙂
Butterfly Jar

Another idea that requires you to draw a jar. This time, a butterfly is stuck in the jar, and another one comes to help. This image can have many meanings, and I like to think that somehow, the free butterfly will manage to help the other one.
Butterflies Around a Flower

We already discovered a butterfly and a flower earlier in the list, but this time many butterflies are flying around the flower. This drawing shows the butterfly in various positions: front and side views. It’s a nice doodle to try!
Two Butterflies

Now you can make the butterflies look more aesthetically pleasing by giving more shape to their wings. As you can see on the picture here, the shape of the butterfly wing is not like a regular “3”. There are irregularities, that you can translate to your doodles if you want.

From the drawing we just made, you can make it more complicated and aesthetic by adding details to the wings. Butterflies (beside Chimera Butterflies) are known to be very symmetrical. But feel free not to make them 100% symmetrical if you wish.

And here is the more complex version of this drawing, taking it a step further if you’d like! ♥
Happy Cat and Butterfly

This time, the cat is trying to play with the butterfly. Such a cute sight!
Aesthetic Butterfly’s Profile

This butterfly is simple, but I added a lot of little decorations (strokes, stars, dots) to make it more aesthetic. I would advise to draw with a pencil first if you decide to draw a star inside the butterfly like I did here! 🙂
Book Filled with Butterflies

That, for me, is some really dreamy view. I love reading, and imagining stories. To me, the butterflies represent the stories and the world of imagination hidden inside the book.
Line of Butterflies

This time, let’s draw a couple of butterflies following a flying heart. You can practice all sorts of positions for your butterflies on this one.
Butterflies and Flowers

Another drawing of butterflies accompanied by flowers!
Simple Butterflies

This time, we draw stars next to the butterflies. I have to say, drawing little decorative stars next to anything is my favorite way to make a drawing aesthetically pleasing.
Simple Cat and Butterfly

Another cat looking at a butterfly. This time, we only draw the head of the cat, which should be easier than the whole body if you had difficulties with that!
Little Boy and Butterfly

A little boy running after a butterfly, asking the butterfly to wait. Isn’t it cute ?
Butterfly-Cat

We’ve drawn a lot of cats looking at butterflies, trying to play with butterflies or butterflies flying around. Now, we draw a butterfly-cat ! Or a cat butterfly ? Anyway, a cat mixed with a butterfly. It makes it look like a cat fairy.
Butterfly With Beautiful Pattern

This time, I worked on the pattern of the wings. When I was a child, I kept thinking that some butterflies’ wings really looked like eyes. It was so pretty, and sometimes a little scary.
To draw a butterfly like this, start with a simple “empty” butterfly, without the pattern in the wings. When you’re satisfied with the shape you’ve given the wings, you can start drawing the pattern you want. Don’t make it too complicated, because you’re supposed to be able to draw the same pattern on both sides!
Simple Butterfly Profile

Look at this butterfly! Isn’t it cute? I really like the little head on the thin body with the short antennas. You can draw any pattern you want in the wings. Butterflies are so fun to draw 🙂 This way, you can give them different vibe. From cute to whimsical, to mysterious.
Butterfly on Hand

Drawing a hand isn’t easy, right ? But there’s something about hands. For me, it makes a drawing very aesthetically pleasing to see a hand reaching out to something. If you can’t draw the hand, you can also skip it and replace it with a flower, for example!
Butterfly Flying Away

A cute butterfly flying away. This one is very simple to draw. The body of the butterfly on this doodle is very lean and long, and there aren’t many details brought to it.
Simple Butterfly

First, a very simple doodle of a butterfly’s front view.
As we learned earlier in the article, we can easily go from this view to a profile view. I did it for this butterfly as well!

Negative Space Butterfly

I love working with negative space when I doodle. Working with negative space means that you leave some space without color to detail the shape you’re drawing. Here, I left blank space in the wings to bring details.
Perfectly Symmetrical Butterfly

Another front view of a butterfly. Here, I worked on perfect symmetry. Butterflies are symmetrical insects, which makes them so interesting to observe. Making a symmetrical drawing is not always easy. But if you’re drawing on squared paper, it’s easier!
Aesthetic Butterfly with Big Wings

Another flying butterfly. This one has very big wings compared to its body!
A Girl With a Butterfly

You can also work on making characters with very simple and aesthetic lines. Here, I drew a girl with a few lines. Then, I drew the butterfly. Even though there is not much details brought into the drawing, you can easily recognize the girl and the butterfly.
Butterfly Wandering

Another flying butterfly. It seems like he’s looking for a new flower to fly around… What do you think ? 🙂 I love drawing butterflies in this position!
Three Butterflies and Stars

Of course, you can also draw many butterflies together in an aesthetic way.
Girl Surrounded by Butterflies

Another girl with butterflies! But this time, the girl is surrounded by butterflies. They are very big in size compared to her, but she’s not scared. It feels like she’s dreaming about them to me.
Small Butterfly

Yet another butterfly from the front view. Adding stars and little dots make it more aesthetic in my opinion. Even if the doodle is simple, you can bring this aesthetic vibe with these little decorations.
Butterfly Top View

Probably my favorite view of a butterfly! Here, we see the butterfly from the top, but not completely. The perspective is not the easiest to draw, because the wings aren’t similar in size when you draw it this way. But it also means that a mistake in the symmetry can be hidden easily! 🙂
Butterfly Chibi Girl

I’m not too sure what the difference is between a fairy and a butterfly-girl. But after the butterfly-cat, here we mixed the chibi girl and the butterfly! She has big wings, little antennas, and she can’t speak.

Anoter version of a butterfly-girl. We keep the antennas and the fact that she can not speak. She bas big bug-eyes and very big wings that are more detailed.
Flying Butterfly-Girl

And now for the last one, we draw another girl-butterfly ! But this time, she’s flying! Of course, you can also call it a fairy. But I made them with the intent of being a butterfly, so… 🙂
Wrap up
That’s it for today’s collection ! I hope you liked it and could find some inspiration in these beauties.
